UZUMAKI
Abstract:
Have you ever found your career on a “downward spiral” or your life “spiralling out of control?” Spirals permeate every corner of our vast unknowable universe, from the fragile arrangement of seeds on a sunflower’s face to the endless expanse of open galaxies. They have existed infinitely longer than we can ask or imagine and will continue to exist for time immemorial. Inspired by Junji Ito’s serial manga of the same name; this contemporary performance UZUMAKI explores the shape and unseen psychological horror implicit in a spiral. UZUMAKI attempts to uncover the peccable frailty of the human mind and body when stacked up against this seething, spiral power. This piece uses the pedestrian human body as an offering for the spiral to consume, infecting and moulding our three performers in its hypnotizing image. For this piece, a choice was made to draw from performers with little dancing backgrounds so that the approach to spirals doesn’t become overly streamlined or beautified by a trained dancing background. Indulge in the awkward shapes facilitated by the spiral upon the human body and beware its hypnotic abilities.
